Let’s be honest, roofing in August isn’t for the faint-hearted. You’re working high up, grafting hard, with the sun beating down, hot felt under your boots, and no shade in sight.

We know the job doesn’t stop when it gets hot. But staying safe in the summer heat is just as important as getting the job done. So here’s a quick guide to keeping cool, staying sharp, and looking after yourself and your crew this summer.

1. Get In, Get it Done, Get Out

If you can, start early. It’s cooler, quieter, and you’ll beat the midday sun – which is where mistakes happen.

  • Smash out the heavy work in the morning
  • Take regular breaks, even short ones
  • Find shade where you can (bit of scaffold cover goes a long way)

2. Water > Everything

You might not feel it, but you’re losing water fast. Once you’re dizzy or shaky, it’s too late. Drinks small sips all day – not just when you’re thirsty.

  • Keep a big bottle in your gear or van
  • Skip the fizzy drinks and energy stuff – they make it worse
  • If one of the lads is lagging, get them a drink and a breather

3. Don’t Strip Off – Gear Up

It’s roasting, we get it. But working shirtless is asking for burnt skin and battered shoulders. You can stay cool without losing your PPE.

Go for:

  • Lightweight high-vis shirts that let air through
  • Sun caps or visors (the kind that covers your neck too)
  • UV safety specs – eyes can burn too

4. Know the Warning Signs

Working through heat exhaustion doesn’t make you tough – it makes you danger to everyone on site.

Watch out for:

  • Headaches, sickness, or feeling dizzy
  • Heavy sweating or dry skin
  • Confusion or slurred speech

If someone’s off, don’t mess about:

  1. Get them off the roof
  2. Cool them down, get them water
  3. Call for help if it’s serious

5. Don’t Forget the Gear

Heat messes with adhesives, membranes, sealants – even your tools.

  • Keep stuff in the shade or in the van (not in the sun)
  • Check if your gear’s meant to be used in high temperatures
  • Flexitec, felts, and certain tapes don’t like the heat – follow the guidelines

We all want to finish the job. But there’s no point smashing through it if someone ends up in A&E.

Take care of yourself and your crew this August. Work smart, gear up, and stay cool out there.
